Reading Navs on Rectory Farm
Small Group Bible Studies
Oak Tree Cottage, Rectory Farm is the home of a community-focused ministry seeking to learn and apply the Christian faith beyond student days. The farm is a great location for meeting in small groups where people can engage deeply and honestly with spiritual questions whatever their background. The focus is small group Bible study where we look at Jesus 'in his own words'. The studies move along according to the pace of the members, seeking to ensure everyone has the freedom to ask their questions and feel included. However, the studies also seek to help people to grow far beyond their initial questions to real maturity in the Christian faith, recognising how the gospel transforms the whole of life today.
The value of having both newcomers and old-timers around together cannot be over-emphasised as this helps us remain grounded in our faith, ensuring it stands up to the hard questions, whilst also having an intentionality that fosters growth and discipleship.
Students
In addition to our small groups, the farm hosts various groups for retreats or weekends away. These include Latin Link - who organise short term mission trips to Latin america -and UCCF who oversee the Christian Union movement in the UK. We also host discussion evenings, film nights and seminars as well as other one-off events in line with our overall vision. Students are also welcome to come out to the small groups which are a 15 minute drive from Reading university campus.
About us
We are a married couple with a young family who are excited about the relevance and importance of the Christian gospel for our society today. We are both Navigator representatives and have been involved with navs for many years, having been in student navs groups in Cardiff and Edinburgh. We led the Edinburgh work till 2006 when we felt the call to come back South and transition to ministry in working life. Neil work as a 3/4 time GP locally and Emmie is currently a full-time mum. We feel that working out the Christian life in the normality of daily family, working and student life is crucial to living integrated lives for God. We seek to apply the maxim 'The whole of the gospel for the whole of the person for the whole of life' and welcome others who want to explore this or help us do it in a nondenominational setting.
